Our community learned this week that STEM is on the chopping block for closure next year. The district is facing a significant budget deficit and the Seattle Public Schools Superintendent has put forth two proposals of elementary and K-8 schools that will be closed to address the deficit. To our STEM community’s great dismay, STEM is on the closure list under both proposals.
The district is holding a series of community meetings in October and November, the Superintendent will present his final recommendation to the School Board in November, and the School Board will vote on it in December. (See more information about the process, the proposed closure lists, and the proposed new school assignments and zones here: Well-Resourced Schools at Seattle Public Schools – Seattle Public Schools (seattleschools.org.)
Now is the time to raise our voices and work to save STEM! Our PTA is working hard on putting together community and legislative advocacy plans. Read more here or below about how to get involved.
